Andrew Kevin Walker, the writer of the cult classic “Seven”, delivers a difficult and not-so-original drama, although the movie could have been much better if more attention had been given to the characterization and if a better director had been appointed. The film’s dark tones evoke the theme and the plot, but it lacks the originality and innovation that could have taken it to the next level.
The characters are poorly characterized, and the film is full of clichés, making the movie feel longer than it should have been. However, the music is commendable, adding to the overall atmosphere of the film.
The lead role of Tom Wells is played by Nicolas Cage, who presents a solid performance, bringing the empty character to life. Joaquin Phoenix, in the role of Max’s assistant, is great but restricted in his performance. The supporting cast, including the recently deceased James Gandolfini and Peter Stormare, also deliver noteworthy performances.
Overall, “8mm” leaves the impression that it could have been better, but it’s not a bad film either. It’s a dark, atmospheric thriller with excellent acting, but the abundance of clichés might not appeal to everyone. Fans of the genre will find it worth a watch.
