An eerie chill is set to creep into theaters with the upcoming Indian Malayalam-language horror thriller film, “Bramayugam” (translated as “The Age of Madness”). Directed by Rahul Sadasivan and jointly produced by Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios, the film promises to send shivers down the audience’s spine.

Starring the legendary Mammootty in a chilling role, alongside talented actors Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, and Amalda Liz, “Bramayugam” is slated to hit the screens on February 15, 2024.

Bramayugam (2024)

The genesis of “Bramayugam” began with a meeting between producer Chakravarthy Ramachandra and director Rahul Sadasivan shortly after the release of Sadasivan’s previous film, “Bhoothakaalam” in 2022. This encounter led to the birth of Night Shift Studios, a production house dedicated to horror films, in collaboration with YNOT Studios. The film marks Night Shift Studios’ debut venture.

During the film’s launch, director Sadasivan hinted that the story is deeply rooted in the dark folklore of Kerala. The ambitious project aims for a simultaneous release across five Indian languages, underscoring its pan-Indian appeal. Notably, acclaimed Malayalam novelist T. D. Ramakrishnan was roped in to enrich the film’s dialogues with his literary prowess.

In terms of casting, Mammootty is set to portray the antagonist, investing 30 days into the role, while Arjun Ashokan takes on the protagonist’s mantle, dedicating 60 days to the film. Joining them are Sidharth Bharathan and Amalda Liz, adding depth to the ensemble cast.

Behind the camera, Shehnad Jalal takes charge as the cinematographer, while Christo Xavier weaves the film’s haunting melodies. The meticulous attention to detail extends to the production design, spearheaded by Jothish Shankar.

Principal photography commenced on a momentous note on August 17, 2023, coinciding with the Kerala New Year, at Kochi’s MJI Studios. The shoot later shifted to Ottapalam, capturing the essence of Kerala’s mystical landscape. Mammootty wrapped up his portions by mid-September, with the entire filming concluding on October 18, 2023.

The anticipation surrounding “Bramayugam” intensified with the release of the first look on Mammootty’s 72nd birthday, showcasing a haunting monochrome image. Subsequent teasers and trailers, including a grand unveiling event in Abu Dhabi attended by Mammootty himself, only added to the intrigue.

As the release date of February 15, 2024, approaches, audiences brace themselves for an unforgettable cinematic experience. With its unique black-and-white format and spine-tingling narrative, “Bramayugam” promises to redefine horror cinema. And with Christo Xavier’s evocative music haunting every frame, “Bramayugam” is poised to leave an indelible mark on the genre.
